The introduction of the Third Party Contract Rights Act has fundamental implications on this area of law. If it is being taught and examined upon, then the publisher needs to update this book.

This is a good simple overview of Florida probate law, with useful checklists to make sure you do not overlook the obvious. You can find much of the information in the Florida statutes, but this is much more readable and it also coordinates and organizes its information better. It is more of an outline than a treatise, but if you need a treatise you need a lawyer, not this book. It serves the purpose for which it was designed well.

Summary : Who is this book written for?

This book is written in the style of a friendly guide to law rather than a textbook. This creates confusion as the book sets out to discuss in detail problems with trusts in the English common law but does so in a fudgy you know what I mean kind of a way. Discussion centres around conceptual, more abstract, aspects of trusts and equity but with inadequate reference to the technical nature of the law (you really need to be able to supply this for yourself). Worse still, Parker and Mellows do not address all issues relevant to law students and their tendancy to gloss over some of the more technical aspects of the law explains why their conclusions leave the reader feeling unsatisfied. I would only recommend this book to someone who has a good basic knowledge of trusts as a basis for discussion. It is not an accurate guide to the law and is likely to confuse the undergraduate and mentally damage the more general reader.

Easy to understand and numerous specimen wills. However, the fact that the edition is dated 1990 calls into question the currency of the information given. There have been numerous similar books written since 1990, obviously with reference to more up to date legislation.
Also there was a dearth of information in how to avoid inheritance tax (IHT); given the escalation in house values in recent years, far more people stand to be caught out by IHT. Any book about writing wills worth its salt must deal in some depth with IHT issues.

Legal information for the lay person is frequently written in a dry or boring style, but this author is interesting and readable. It's difficult to think about the death of our loved ones. Painful as it can be we need to be prepared to carry out their final wishes. A resource like this will provide answers to confusing questions during what can be an overwhelming time of life.
